Prepping Your Home for Cooler Weather

As summer starts to fade and the evenings draw in, now is a good time to get your home ready for cooler weather. A little preparation now can help you stay comfortable, make the most of your heating and spot any small issues before they become bigger problems.

From checking your heating to making your living space feel cosy, here are some simple ways to get your home ready for autumn and winter.

Give your heating a check

Before you need your heating every day, make sure everything is working as expected. Turn your heating on for a short time and check that radiators are warming up properly.

If a radiator has cold spots, particularly towards the top, it may need bleeding. Always follow the instructions for your heating system and, if you are unsure, speak to a qualified professional.

It is also worth checking your thermostat and any heating controls. Make sure they are set correctly and that timers are working as expected.

Keep the warmth in

Small changes around your home can make a noticeable difference when temperatures drop. Check windows and doors for draughts and make sure curtains or blinds are working properly.

Thicker curtains can help reduce heat loss through windows, while rugs can make hard floors feel warmer underfoot. Just make sure curtains, rugs and furniture are kept safely away from heaters.

If you use a portable heater, always place it on a stable, level surface with plenty of space around it. Never cover a heater or use it to dry clothes and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions.

Let the light in

Before the darker evenings set in, give your windows a good clean both inside and outside.

Dust, dirt and marks can build up over time and reduce the amount of light coming through. A clean window can help make the most of the daylight available, particularly during the shorter days of autumn and winter.

A simple window cleaning tool, such as a window vacuum or squeegee, can make the job easier.

Keep curtains and blinds fully open during daylight hours to make the most of the natural light. Moving larger furniture or objects away from windows can help too, giving daylight more space to brighten the room.

Get cosy

Cooler evenings are the perfect excuse to make your living space more comfortable. Blankets and throws can add an extra layer of warmth, while lamps and softer lighting can create a cosy atmosphere when the evenings draw in.

If you have a heated blanket or heated throw, check it carefully before use. Look for any signs of damage and follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, storage and safe use.

Check your appliances

Autumn is a good time to check appliances that may have had less use over summer. Give your Tumble Dryer and any other household appliances a quick clean and check for any visible damage.

If you are putting away seasonal appliances, clean them first and store them somewhere dry and safe. Keeping cables neatly stored can also help prevent damage.

Do a quick home safety check

Cooler weather often means more time indoors, so it is worth checking your home's safety essentials. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries if needed.

Keep heaters and other heat producing appliances away from curtains, bedding and furniture. Never leave portable heaters unattended while they are switched on.

Ready for the colder months?

Preparing your home for cooler weather does not have to mean making big changes. A few simple checks, some extra layers and a little organisation can help make your home feel warmer and more comfortable as the seasons change.

Remember to always check your appliance instructions and follow the manufacturer's guidance, particularly when it comes to heating products, electrical appliances and seasonal storage.
