How to Pair Your Universal Remote and Fix Common Issues

Universal remote controls are a simple and effective solution for replacing an old faulty remote, decluttering your coffee table or even replacing multiple remotes with a single device.

Whether you have lost your original TV remote or simply want to control several devices using one controller, universal remotes can make life easier. Here's a step-by-step guide to pairing your universal remote and some handy troubleshooting tips to help if things do not go quite as planned.

Pairing Your Universal Remote

Most universal remotes follow a similar pairing process. While the steps may vary slightly depending on the brand and model the general method remains the same.

Always refer to the user manual for specific guidance.

Step 1: Turn on Your Device

Ensure the device you want to control whether it is a television set top box or sound system is powered on and batteries are inserted.

Step 2: Enter Pairing Mode

Press and hold the Setup or Magic button on your remote depending on your model until the LED light blinks for the required amount. This puts the remote into pairing mode.

Step 3: Select Device Type

Press the corresponding device button for example TV, AUX, or DVD. This tells the remote which device you are trying to programme.

Step 4: Enter the Code

Using the number keys enter the specific 3, 4 or 5 digit code for your device brand. These codes are usually found in the manual or on the manufacturer’s website. If entered correctly the LED light should blink twice.

Step 5: Test the Remote

Try turning the device off using the Power button. If it works well done your remote is paired. If not repeat the steps with the next available code for your device.

Using Code Search If You Do Not Have the Code

If you do not have access to the correct code most universal remotes offer an automatic code search function

  • Turn the device on
  • Press and hold Setup or Magic until the LED blinks twice
  • Press the device key such as TV
  • Enter 9, 9, 1 to start the search (Refer to the user manual)
  • Repeatedly press the Power button every second or two until the device turns off
  • Press Setup again to lock in the code

Troubleshooting Tips

If you are having trouble pairing your remote, try the following:

  • Check the batteries - Low power can prevent the remote from entering pairing mode or sending a strong signal
  • Clear obstacles - Make sure there is nothing blocking the infrared signal between the remote and the device
  • Try alternative codes - Not every code works for every model within a brand Try several options if available
  • Reset the remote - Some remotes have a reset procedure (refer to the user manual) that clears all stored codes allowing you to start

Final Thoughts

Pairing a universal remote control does not have to be complicated. With the right steps and a bit of patience you can quickly replace multiple remotes with one convenient solution. Whether you are syncing to a TV soundbar or streaming box following these simple instructions should get you back in control in no time.
