Why Cleaning Your Mouse and Keyboard Matters

Your mouse and keyboard are among the most frequently used items in any workspace, yet they’re often overlooked when it comes to regular cleaning. Over time, they naturally collect dust, debris and bacteria through daily use. While this may not always be visible, it can have a noticeable impact on both hygiene and performance.

Keeping your equipment clean is not just about maintaining a tidy desk. It plays an important role in supporting a healthier working environment and ensuring your devices continue to function effectively over time.

The Importance of Regular Cleaning

Because keyboards and mice are high-contact surfaces, they can quickly become a breeding ground for germs. Oils from your hands, food particles and general dust build up between keys and across surfaces, especially if equipment is used throughout the day or shared between users.

Without routine cleaning, this build-up can contribute to the spread of bacteria. In addition, it can affect how your equipment performs. Keys may become sticky or less responsive, and a dirty mouse sensor can lead to inaccurate tracking, making tasks more difficult.

Regular cleaning helps to reduce these risks, improving both hygiene standards and the reliability of your equipment. It is a simple step that can prevent avoidable issues and prolong the life of your devices.

How to Clean Your Equipment Safely

Cleaning your mouse and keyboard does not require specialist tools, but it should be carried out with care. Always refer to the user manual before carrying out any steps.

Begin by turning off or unplugging your devices. For keyboards, gently shake them upside down to remove loose debris. Compressed air can be used to clear out dust from between the keys.

Next, use a microfibre cloth to wipe down all surfaces.  Cotton buds can be helpful for reaching smaller gaps and edges.

For your mouse, wipe the outer casing and ensure the sensor on the underside is clean and free from dust. This will help maintain accurate movement and responsiveness.

Avoid removing keys unless your keyboard is designed for it, as this can lead to damage if done incorrectly. Always refer to the user manual for guidance.

Positioning for Comfort

In addition to keeping your equipment clean, correct positioning is essential for maintaining comfort and reducing the risk of strain.

Your keyboard should be positioned so that your forearms are level with your desk, with your elbows at approximately a right angle. Your wrists should remain straight and neutral while typing, rather than bent upwards or downwards.

Your mouse should sit close to your keyboard and at the same height, allowing you to use it without overreaching. Keeping your arm supported and relaxed can help prevent discomfort in the wrist, shoulder and upper arm.

Small Changes, Lasting Impact

Introducing simple habits into your daily routine can make a significant difference. Washing your hands regularly, avoiding eating at your desk and carrying out quick, routine cleaning all help maintain a cleaner workspace.

By looking after your mouse and keyboard, you are not only improving hygiene but also supporting better performance and extending the lifespan of your equipment. Small, consistent actions can have a lasting impact on both your comfort and productivity at work.
