Argos Support’s Tips to Prepare Tech Gifts Before Christmas Day

Unwrapping a new gadget on Christmas morning should be exciting - not stressful. But many tech gifts need a little preparation before they’re ready to use. From updates to batteries, these small steps can make a big difference in avoiding delays and frustration with new devices on what can be a chaotic morning at the best of times!

In this blog we will explore some practical tips to ensure tech presents you’ve bought are ready to go from the off!

Batteries

First off, we will start with a relatively obvious one, batteries! Although there’s been a huge rise in rechargeable batteries and USB powered devices, many toys and gadgets still rely on AA or AAA batteries for running.

Be sure to stock up when getting your sticky tape a wrapping paper! Or add a fresh set to the box for backup. Rechargeable batteries are a great alternative for long - term use.

Power Up and Install Updates

It’s always best if you can turn on new devices before the big day, to reduce headaches later down the line. Products such as games consoles, tablets, and smart devices often require software updates before they can be used.

These updates can take time, especially on busy networks. Switch the device on and complete any updates before wrapping it up will save potentially hours of updating and waiting. Then repackage, so it’s ready to go straight out of the box.

Fully Charge the Battery

Nothing spoils the excitement like a flat battery. Pre charge phones, tablets, smartwatches, and rechargeable toys to 100% before gifting, again save the wait on Christmas day to play with new goodies. For devices with removable batteries, install them so everything works immediately.

Setting up, Download Apps or Games in Advance

If the gift needs apps or games - such as a console or tablet for a younger family member – setting up in advance gives you time to update the devices, downloading a few essentials ahead of time and set up and privacy or parental settings required. This saves waiting for downloads and being under pressure to set up a device new to you on Christmas morning.

Check for Accessories and Compatibility

Make sure you have the right cables, adapters, or controllers. Do a bit of homework about the product you’re buying. For example, some consoles need HDMI cables or extra controllers for multiplayer fun.
Another point to check for is connectivity on devices, if purchasing accessories such as Wireless headphones, make sure the device it’s intended to connect to uses the same technology, such as Bluetooth.

Be the home tech hero!

At Argos Support we love a technical product manual and always recommend reading them fully! Getting to know the gift you are buying can really go a long way towards the enjoyment of the recipient. Knowing how to operate the product or navigate the menu systems can reduce stress and product confusion, as well as ensure people get the most from their gifts.

For help with products, we always recommend checking the relevant product support page on this site, here you can find troubleshooting tips, contact details and digital support for your product.
