Furniture Support: How do I stop my furniture creaking or squeaking?

We’ve all experienced a time when our furniture has been noisy. Whether it's a creaky chair, a squeaky bed frame, or a rattling dresser, those unwelcome sounds can be both annoying and inconvenient. In this article, we highlight some effective and straightforward solutions to stop your furniture from creaking and squeaking.

Please note: These tips are general steps which can apply to many ranges of furniture. They do not require the furniture to be opened or repaired. If these user-friendly tips do not rectify the issue, please consult your user manual or contact the support team for your furniture.

Identify the source of the noise

Before looking at how to stop noises, it is important to identify exactly what is causing any sounds. To check this, we recommend gently pressing, rocking, or moving different parts of the furniture to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. This initial step will help you understand what is causing the sound and therefore apply the most targeted solution for effective noise reduction.

Lubricate hinges and joints

Squeaky hinges and joints are common culprits for noisy furniture. If you're dealing with a wardrobe or cupboard, we suggest applying a suitable lubricant to reduce friction and eliminate noise. We recommend a silicone-based spray or a specialised furniture lubricant. To use it, simply spray or apply the lubricant to the hinges, joints, or any moving parts of the furniture, and then work the piece back and forth to distribute the lubricant evenly.

Insert felt pads

If your furniture tends to scrape or make noise when moved, felt pads can be a simple yet effective solution. They can be purchased from various retailers. To use, attach the self-adhesive felt pads to the bottom of chair legs, table legs, or any furniture feet that are scraping on the floor. The pads provide a smooth and noise-free glide, preventing friction and minimising disruptive sounds. Tighten loose screws and bolts

Noisy furniture can also be caused by loose screws and bolts. These parts can contribute to a rattling and creaking noise. We suggest taking a moment to inspect your furniture for any visible loose screws or bolts. If there are loose parts, use a screwdriver or wrench to tighten any screws and bolts to secure the joints.

Use anti-slip rug grippers

Sliding or wobbling furniture can generate unwanted noise. If you find that your furniture tends to slide on hardwood or tile floors, you may want to consider anti-slip rug grippers. These adhesive pads can be placed under furniture legs, providing traction and preventing sliding. This is a great alternative than having to reconsider the type of flooring used in the home or the furniture you are using.

Use door bumpers

If you find your cabinet or wardrobe doors are noisy when shutting, you may be able to remedy this with a door bumper. You can purchase them from various retailers as a simple solution. These small, adhesive bumpers can be attached to the inside of cabinet doors, preventing them from hitting the frame which reduces noise. This is a quick and non-intrusive solution for quieter cabinet doors.

Secure wobbly furniture

Wobbly furniture can be a persistent source of noise. Luckily, it can be easily solved. To stabilise the furniture, consider using furniture wedges. You can insert these wedges under the wobbly leg or corner until the furniture is level and stable. This simple solution not only eliminates noise but also enhances the overall stability of the piece.

Consider weight limit restrictions

Sometimes exceeding weight restrictions can cause furniture to squeak and creak. For structures like drawers, putting too much in the drawer can overload it and put more strain on the runners when opening and closing. This can be avoided by removing items which should prevent squeaks from occurring. It also can lead to a longer life for the drawers and prevent them from collapsing due to being overloaded.
