FAQs

This appliance can be used for clipping and contouring human scalp hairs. Do not use it for any other purpose. Why not? The cutting element of a hair clipper is usually wider than that of other male grooming devices. The top of the head is large, without obstacles, so a wider cutting element will allow you to cut hair faster. The comb of a hair clipper is larger than those of other devices and specifically designed to lift the hairs to cut them. Scalp hairs are often longer than those on other body zones and usually less stiff.

Be certain the clipper is in the OFF position.

  • Select the comb attachment depending on the desired hair length, the remaining hair length is indicated on each comb.
  • Slide the selected comb into the guiding grooves on both sides of the Clipper swivel head and push until you hear it '‘click'’ into place. Make sure the comb attachment locks properly into position.
  • Turn the Hair Length Setting Adjustment Ring to set the comb to the desired setting.
  • Do not turn the length setting adjustment ring beyond the highest hair length setting.
  • The arrowhead on the Clipper indicates which setting has been selected.
  • When you are clipping for the first time, start at the maximum clipping length setting (#5) of the regular comb to familiarize yourself with the appliance and prevent accidentally trimming hairs too short.

As you become familiar with the settings, adjust the Hair Length Selector to desired trimming length.

  • Comb or brush out cut hair.
  • Check if longer hairs have remained behind. If this is the case, use the clipper to clip the area again.
  • Take a shower and wash your hair or use a hairdryer to blow out cut hair.
  • Clean the clipper according to the instructions in the user manual.

The hair has to be dry and free of any kind of styling gel. Comb the hair in the direction of hair growth. Check if the comb is fixed properly on the appliance and if you have chosen the right hair length setting. Always clip the hair against the direction of hair growth; This means that you have to move the appliance in different directions across the head. Move the appliance slowly through the hair. Remove cut hair from the appliance and the comb. Remove cut hair from the hair. Before contouring, look carefully where you want the hairline to be. Contour the neckline and the hair around the ears without the comb. Do not press the appliance onto the skin too firmly.

  • We advise you to take (one of) the following actions if the appliance produces an uneven cutting result:
  • Keep the flat part of the comb (the contact area) fully in contact with the skin at all times.
  • If the appliance is pressed too firmly onto the skin when the appliance is moved through the hair, the resulting hair length may not correspond with the indicated hair length.
  • If the comb does not touch the skin when the appliance is moved through the hair, the trimmer cannot cut the hair optimally.
  • Always move the trimmer against the direction of hair growth.
  • Since hair does not grow in the same direction, you need to move the appliance in different directions (upwards, downward and across).
  • Make sure the comb is adjusted correctly.
  • If you press the appliance against the skin too hard, you may accidentally adjust the setting.
  • To make sure you have correctly assembled the attachment, detach and re-attach it.
  • Make sure the appliance has been cleaned in accordance with the user manual.
  • Accumulated hair or dirt may reduce the performance of your appliance.
  • Make sure the battery contains sufficient energy or that the adapter is connected to the mains properly.

If your appliance still produces an uneven cutting result, please contact Philips Consumer Support. You can do this by calling 02079 490 240.

We advise you to clean the product after each use. For specific instructions, please consult the user manual.

If your skin feels uncomfortable after using your Philips Groomer there may be a few causes for this. Read our advice below to try and solve this issue yourself.

1. The shaving head could be damaged

The shaving foil of your Philips Groomer can wear down over time.

Before each use inspect the shaver head. If the shaving foil looks damaged or worn out, replace this immediately. To find out how to replace the shaver head of your groomer please refer to your user manual.

2. Tips to avoid skin irritation

Follow our tips below to get the best result out of your Philips Groomer and to avoid discomfort and irritation.

Make sure your skin is clean before using your Philips Groomer.

Always make sure your groomer is in full contact with your skin.

Apply gentle pressure and move the groomer slowly over your skin.

Pre-trim long or hard to shave hair.

Allow some adjustment time period and give your skin some time to recover in between grooming sessions.

If your Philips Groomer is trimming your beard or hair unevenly, try our troubleshooting advice to solve this issue.

1. Comb not attached correctly

It is important that the cutting element or the trimming comb which you are using with your groomer is attached correctly to its body. If the attachments are not placed correctly, the groomer may not work, or give desired results.

2. Pressing the groomer to hard

If you press the groomer too hard against your scalp or skin, you may accidentally change the settings to high or low or apply uneven pressure. This can result in uneven clipping.

For the best trimming experience, make sure your groomer is in full contact with your skin and move it gently and steadily.

3. Moving the groomer in one direction

For best results, make sure that you trim your hair against the grain. When trimming your hair, it is important to keep in mind that your hair grows in different directions.

Therefore, to get an even trim, try moving your trimmer in different directions (upwards, downwards and across) so that it covers all of your hair.

4. Cutting wet hair

Wet hair is more tricky to trim as they tend to stick to your skin and can be missed by the device. Therefore, we advise clipping your hair when they are completely dry.

5. Using incorrect attachment

Your Philips Groomer may come with different attachments to use on your hair and beard. It is important to use the correct attachment on the corresponding area.

Facial hair are usually stiffer than scalp hair. Hence, the beard attachment is designed and tested only for beards.

The cutting element and comb of a beard trimmer are usually smaller than that of a hair clipper. This allows you to easily reach in smaller areas, like under your nose.

Therefore, for an even trim, make sure you are using the correct attachment.

5. Incorrect length setting

Not all beard trimmers are fully optimized to groom very long beards (>10mm) and more strokes are needed for ideal result.

If your Philips grooming device makes a strange noise, or it does not trim your hair as well as before, we can help you with some simple troubleshooting steps to solve this problem.

1. Groomer is dirty

Your groomer requires regular cleaning to function properly. Hair or debris can get stuck in the device and effect its performance.

To clean your groomer, take off the attachments and clean the area underneath the attachment. A lot of hair can collect there. If your groomer is washable, you can clean this area with water. Do not use soapy water or any cleaning detergents, as this can remove the protective grease on the cutter and effect its performance.

If your appliance is not washable, clean it with the small brush provided with it or use a cotton bud.

2. Groomer is not assembled properly

It can be that your groomer has not been assembled properly, which is causing it to make a strange noise. Take off the trimming or cutting attachments that you are using, and put them on again. Follow the instructions mentioned in your user manual.

3. Groomer is not oiled

We recommend oiling your groomer every 6 weeks. You can put a drop of oil on the teeth of the cutting element of your groomer. You can use the oil provided in the packaging or any other sewing machine oil.

4. Groomer is not charged

If your groomer is running low on battery, then it may sound odd to you. Please fully recharge your device before any further use.

In case your groomer runs on disposable AA batteries, it might be time to replace the batteries. When replacing the batteries make sure you use the appropriate batteries for the device as mentioned in the user manual. Do not mix different types or old and new batteries. When putting in the batteries make sure the + and - poles point in the right direction.

Wash and dry the attachments separately before reattaching them to the groomer.

You should charge your Philips Male Grooming devices when the charging indicator on the body of your groomer signals low battery. If your device does not have a battery indicator on it, then charge it whenever the groomer is working slower than usual.

Insert the charging plug in to you grooming device's charging socket. Make sure the plug's shape matches the socket and is completely inserted. Do not force it in.

The charging indicator on your device will start flashing to indicate that the groomer is charging. Once the groomer is fully charged, the charging indicator lights up continuously for approximately 30 minutes and then automatically turns off to save energy.

After charging, unplug the charger from the power outlet and the groomer. Your groomer is now ready to use.

For most groomers, normal charging time is between 1 to 8 hours. If you are charging your device for the first time, we recommend letting it charge for at least 3 hours. Check your user manual for specific charging instructions of your model.

Philips Hair Clippers are handy to be used yourself or by your partner to easily trim your hair.

1. Before use

Before cutting your hair, make sure you have all the right equipment. You will need a Philips Hair or a multi purpose product with hair clipping attachments, a mirror, and a cape or towel to cover your neck and shoulders during trimming.

Also, keep hair products and vacuum cleaner accessible for hair setting and cleaning up afterwards.

Wet hair is trickier to trim as they tend to stick to your skin and can be missed by the device. Therefore, we advise clipping your hair when they are completely dry.

Comb your hair in the direction of your natural hair growth.

If you are cutting someone else's hair, make sure their head is at the same level as your chest. This ensures that all parts of the head are clearly visible and within easy reach.

Note: Beard trimmers are designed to trim beard hairs only. We do not recommend using it on other body parts such as your head. This is because you will not get desired results, and it may also cause skin damage.

2. Instructions to use

1.    Attach the desired comb to the clipper handle. If the attachments are not placed correctly, the groomer may not work, or give desired results.

2.    Set the desired length setting. You can do this by turning the length-setting wheel or attaching the correct click-on comb. Start trimming at a high length setting to familiarize yourself with the device and reduce the length setting gradually until you have reached the desired hair length.

3.    Switch on the device.

4.    Move the appliance gently and steadily, with light pressure against the direction of hair growth. Make sure that the flat part of the comb always stays in contact with your skin to obtain an even result.

5.    Do not press the groomer too hard against your scalp or skin, you may accidentally change the settings and that can result in uneven trimming.

Use the trimmer without the trimming comb to trim hair close to the skin (0.5 mm) or to contour the neckline and sideburns. Be careful when you trim without a comb because the cutting unit removes every hair it touches.

6.    Hair can collect in the hair chamber and the comb, clean in between turns. Once done, switch off and clean the appliance. We advise to clean the device after each use.
