Caring for Woven Fabrics: Tips for Maintaining Your Elegant Furniture

Woven fabrics add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any home. From luxurious velvet sofas to intricate chenille armchairs, these fabrics can transform your living space. However, maintaining their beauty requires some specific care. Here’s how you can keep your woven furniture looking its best.

Regular Vacuuming

Weekly vacuuming is essential to prevent the accumulation of dust, crumbs, hair, and other day-to-day dirt. Use a soft brush or upholstery attachment to gently remove debris from the surface of your furniture. This not only maintains the fabric's appearance but also ensures particles do not embed deeply into the fibres, which can be more challenging to clean later on.

Always check any care guidelines for your product and if available use a dedicated upholstery setting on your vacuum.

Avoid Machine Washing

Unless stated in the product specific care guidelines, woven furniture fabrics should not be machine washed. Even though some cushion covers may have zippers, these are designed solely for ease of dressing and should not be used to remove for washing. Machine washing can cause a breakdown of the fabric fibres, leading to shrinkage, split seams, and a loss of the fabric’s original texture.

Additionally, it may damage any fire-retardant treatment that has been applied to the fabric, compromising safety.

Professional Cleaning

Waiting until dirt and stains are apparent can make cleaning more challenging and less effective. If you have a severe stain, professional cleaners have the right tools and expertise to clean these delicate fabrics without causing damage. We recommend using a trusted service like to ensure your furniture receives the best care.

Spot Cleaning

In between professional cleanings, you may need to address occasional spills or stains. Here’s how to handle them:

Immediate Blotting: If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible.

Solid Spillage Removal: Use a blunt knife or edge to lift the stain from the fabric gently.

Avoid Rubbing: Rubbing the stain can push the liquid deeper into the fibres and make it harder to remove.

Water Blotting: Using water, blot the area with another clean cloth and repeat until the stain is removed. For stubborn stains, consult a professional cleaner to avoid damaging the fabric.

Dab Gently: Work towards the center of the stain, dabbing gently and avoid over-wetting the area to prevent watermarks.

Natural Drying: Allow the area to dry naturally, and gently brush to restore the fabric's pile where necessary.

General Maintenance Tips

Rotate Cushions: If possible, to ensure even wear regularly rotate and flip any removable cushions. This helps maintain their shape and appearance, preventing one area from becoming more worn than others.

Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and weaken the fabric fibres. Position your furniture away from windows or use curtains and blinds to protect it from UV rays.

Use Protective Covers: If you have pets or young children, consider using protective covers on your furniture to prevent accidental damage. These covers can be easily removed and cleaned, offering an additional layer of protection.

By following these care tips, you can keep your woven furniture looking beautiful for years to come. Regular maintenance and professional cleaning are key to preserving the luxurious feel and appearance of these elegant fabrics, ensuring they remain a stunning focal point in your home.
