Love the smell of fresh laundry, but getting an odour from your washing machine? Try these tips to freshen up your washing machine.
Use Vinegar
One of the easiest and most effective ways to freshen up your washing machine is by using vinegar. Simply add two cups of white vinegar to your machine’s detergent dispenser and run a hot water cycle. The vinegar breaks down any build-up of soap scum or mineral deposits in your machine, leaving it smelling fresh.
Clean the Dispenser Drawers
The dispenser drawers in your washing machine can often build up with stubborn detergent and powder over time. To clean them, remove the drawer and soak it in hot, soapy water for 15-20 minutes. Use a toothbrush or a small scrubbing brush to scrub away any dirt or grime. Rinse thoroughly and dry before putting it back in place.
Use Baking Soda
Another great natural cleaning agent that you can use to freshen up your washing machine is baking soda. To do this, add one cup of baking soda to the drum of your machine and run a hot water cycle. The baking soda will help neutralize any odours and leave your machine smelling clean.
Clean the Door Seal
The door seal on your washing machine can often trap moisture and dirt, which can produce an unpleasant smell. To clean it, use a cloth or sponge soaked in hot, soapy water to wipe down the seal. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. You can also use a toothbrush or a small scrubbing brush to get into any tight spaces.
Use Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is an easy household cleaning agent that can quickly freshen up your washing machine. Simply add one cup of lemon juice to the drum of your machine and run a hot water cycle. The citric acid in the lemon juice will remove dirt and grime, and leave the machine with a fruity, zesty scent.
Clean the Filter
The filter in your washing machine can often become clogged with dirt and debris, leading to a build-up of bacteria and mould. Start by removing the filter (consult your machine’s manual for instructions) and rinsing it under running water. Use a toothbrush or a small scrubbing brush to remove any stubborn dirt or debris. Once it’s clean, put it back in place.
Use Essential Oils
If you’re looking for a more natural way to freshen up your washing machine, you can use essential oils. Simply add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to a damp cloth and throw it in the dryer with your laundry. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to the detergent dispenser of your washing machine. Some great essential oils to use include lavender, peppermint, and lemon.
Run a Maintenance Wash
Running a maintenance wash on your washing machine once a month can help keep it clean and fresh. This is done by running a hot water cycle with no clothes in the machine, and add a cup of white vinegar or baking soda to the drum.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your machine is running at its best, leaving your clothes smelling fresh and clean every time.
