Preparing Your Petrol Lawnmower for Summer Use

As summer arrives (eventually) and your lawn begins to grow thicker and faster, your petrol lawnmower becomes one of your most important garden tools. After months of little or no use, it’s essential to get your mower properly prepared for the summer.

In this article, we will look at how to get your lawnmower running smoothly for the summer, so that it will deliver a clean, consistent cut.

Remember to always have the lawnmower turned off completely when carrying out any checks or maintenance.

Start with Cleaning and a Quick Inspection

A build-up of grass and dirt can reduce airflow, affect performance and even lead to rust.

Carefully tip the mower (keeping the spark plug facing upward), then using a firm brush, scrape away dried grass from the mower deck.  Tip the mower back up, then wipe down the body and remove any debris from the air vents.

Take a moment to check its overall condition. Look for loose bolts, worn cables, or any cracked or damaged parts. Check that wheels are secure and rotate smoothly.

Then, inspect the fuel tank and oil reservoir for any signs of leaks.

A quick inspection like this can help you identify minor issues early, preventing them from turning into costly repairs.

Check the Oil and Filters

Engine oil can degrade over time, especially if the mower has been sitting idle.

Start by checking the oil level using the dipstick. If the oil appears dark, dirty, or gritty, it should be replaced. Always use the oil type recommended by the manufacturer. Using fresh oil helps ensure smoother operation and provides better protection for the engine.

Also check any air filters. Your mower engine relies on clean air to run efficiently, a clogged or dirty air filter can restrict airflow, reducing performance.

Checking or cleaning them is usually quite simple, start by removing the air filter cover.

  • Foam filters should be cleaned using warm, soapy water, then left to dry thoroughly.
  • Paper filters should be replaced if they appear clogged or discoloured.

Keeping the air filter clean helps improve fuel efficiency and ensures optimal engine performance.

Inspect the Spark Plug

The spark plug plays a crucial role in running your mower. If it becomes faulty or contaminated, you may experience difficult starting, rough idling, engine misfires, or excessive black smoke.

Remove the spark plug and inspect it for signs of carbon build-up or wear. If it’s still in good condition, clean it gently using a wire brush. However, if it appears damaged or worn, it’s best to replace it. Check your user manual for information on replacing this.

Finally, Petrol

Old petrol can go stale over time, losing its effectiveness and often leading to starting problems. It’s a good idea to drain any leftover petrol from previous season and replace it with fresh petrol. If you don’t use your mower regularly, adding a fuel stabiliser can help maintain the quality of the fuel.

Test Run Before First Mow

Before you begin mowing, give your lawnmower a quick trial run.

Start by priming the engine to ensure a small amount of fuel reaches the carburettor. This creates a richer fuel mixture, which is essential for starting a cold engine.

Next, start the mower in a well-ventilated outdoor area and allow it to idle for a few minutes. As it runs, listen carefully for any unusual noises or vibrations. If everything sounds normal, your mower is ready to use.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your petrol lawnmower for summer doesn’t take long, but it can make a big difference. A well-maintained mower cuts more cleanly, uses less fuel, lasts longer, and is safer to operate.

Taking a little time now will set you up for a smoother, hassle‑free mowing season and a lawn you can be proud of all summer long.
