FAQs
No, Sonicare will not harm your gums and our toothbrushes have been shown in studies to be gentler on dentin than a manual or an oscillating toothbrush. While gentle, Sonicare technology cleans effectively by:
- Gently whipping toothpaste and saliva into an oxygen-rich foamy liquid;
- Directing the liquid between and behind teeth, and along the gum line where plaque bacteria flourish;
- Gently massaging the gums, stimulating blood circulation and helping to dislodge plaque.
The DiamondClean comes with special Gum Care and massage modes to assure even more comfort for sensitive gums. Gum mode provides two minutes of complete whole mouth cleaning, with one additional minute of gentle cleaning for problem areas and along the gum line. Massage mode uses Philips's patented technology to drive fluids to stimulate gums, resulting in healthier gums.
Yes, both the glass and the charger are necessary. The glass must be attached to the base to charge your DiamondClean. The base must also be attached to the glass or used with a charging stand.
- First, make sure that your toothbrush is fully charged.
- Did you purchase your toothbrush within the last 60 days? If so, your Easystart feature may still be activated. The Easystart feature gently increases power over the first 14 uses to ease into the Sonicare brushing experience. If Easystart is activated, your brush may not seem to be as powerful as expected.
- The Easystart feature on your toothbrush may have been activated.To determine this, place the handle in a plugged charger base and press the on/off button firmly. If you hear one beep, the Easystart feature has been deactivated. When you use the brush in this condition the brush will be working at its full power level. If you hear two beeps the Easystart feature has been activated, and you will feel less power.
- If your toothbrush has more than one mode of operation, you may have activated a different mode with a different brushing action. For brushes with dual speed settings, the dual speed button may be at reduced speed setting.
- Old worn brush heads can also seem to be less effective or powerful in their rushing action. If your brush head has been in use for more than 3 months, it should be replaced with a new one. If the problem persists please contact Philips Consumer Support. You can do this by calling 02079 490 240.
If you are not sure of the charge level of your DiamondClean, simply place the handle on the charger and look at the LED display. You can do this any time you like to check the power level. The following describe the various displays you may see when the handle is on the charger:
- An amber flashing light indicates that the charge level is low. You can still brush with your DiamondClean, but the flashing amber light is a reminder that you will need to recharge your DiamondClean handle soon.
- A green flashing light indicates that the handle is partially recharged, but not yet fully recharged. The handle should remain on the charger until fully charged. (See next item)
- A solid green light will appear instead of the amber or green flashing light when the toothbrush is fully charged. The solid green light will remain lit for 10 minutes and then go out. Please note: If the handle is removed from the charger it may (depending on how long it has been charging) show a solid green light even if it is not yet fully charged. Again, any time you are unsure of the charge status of your toothbrush, simply place it on the charger and check the lights. The following descriptions apply when the DiamondClean handle is off the charger.
- A flashing amber light indicates that the charge level is low. You can still brush with your DiamondClean, but the flashing amber light is a reminder that you will need to recharge the toothbrush soon.
- A solid green light that goes out after 30 seconds indicates that the handle has more than 10% charge, but may not be fully charged yet. If the handle has been in the charger for at least 24 hours, then it is fully charged. Verify if the handle is fully charged by placing it in the charger and verifying the status of the light.
While travelling, you can charge your Sonicare DiamondClean via wall outlet or via USB.
- To charge via wall outlet: Place the handle in the charging travel case, plug the USB cord into the travel plug into an electrical outlet. The charge indicator on the handle flashes green until fully charged.
- To charge via USB: Remove the USD cord from the travel plug, and insert the USB plug into any USB port. Use Only Philips USB wall adapter and USB cable provided. Use Only UL listed devices as an alternate method of charging the toothbrush handle in the travel care. This charger is not compatible with previous models of Sonicare.
Yes, once you turn on your Sonicare DiamondClean handle, you can pause the brushing after 5 seconds of use. Before the 5 seconds of use, the handle will simply switch modes. To pause the brushing after 5 seconds of use, press the on/off button. To resume brushing, simply press the on/off button again and the handle will continue and finish the routine. Please note that if the handle is paused for more than 30 seconds, the lights on the handle will fade off and the handle routine will reset.
The likely cause is a small amount of lubricant used in the assembly of the handle. The residual lubricant can be easily cleaned off the handle using a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (<=70%) on a clean, lint-free cloth or paper pad.
Counters, shelves or any surface made of metal (for example, stainless steel, nickel, or iron) may interfere with the operation of the charger and prevent the handle from charging. Placing the charger on a different, non-metallic surface will allow the handle to fully charge. Be sure to charge your Sonicare for at least 24 hours before using again. If the handle still does not charge after repositioning the charger on a non-metallic surface please contact Philips Consumer Support by calling 02079 490 240.
- Remove the brush head and rinse the metal shaft area with warm water.
- Do not push on the rubber seal on the metal shaft with sharp objects, as this may cause damage.
- Use a damp cloth to wipe the entire surface of the handle.
- Allow to air dry.
Note: You may notice that toothpaste residue and water spots are easy to see when they build up on the shiny portion at bottom of the handle. To remove these residues in a way which does not damage important product information on the bottom of the handle, use the following procedure:
- Dampen a soft cloth with lukewarm water only and gently wipe residues from the shiny bottom of the handle.
- Do not rub with abrasive cleaners or cleaning aids such as abrasive pads or brushes. Do not use your fingernails or any other tools. Use of these products may remove important product information from the handle.
- Allow handle to air dry.
To clean brush heads, use the following procedure:
- Rinse the brush head and bristles after each use.
- Remove the brush head from the handle and rinse the brush head connection at least once a week with warm water and allow to air-dry.
Note: Never clean the brush heads or the handles in the dishwasher.

Yes, it is generally safe to leave it on charge all the time. Most modern electric toothbrushes are designed in a way to prevent overcharging. Once the battery is full, the toothbrush simply stops drawing power, meaning it won’t damage the battery or overheat.
