You can have up to five profiles linked to your Portal. These accounts can be Facebook, WhatsApp or Workplace accounts.
Only invite people you trust to add a profile to your Portal. When someone adds their Facebook account on your Portal, their Facebook friends and Messenger connections will become contacts on your Portal, and you will be able to call their contacts. To add WhatsApp contacts to your Portal, connect your WhatsApp account to your Portal.
To add a profile to your Portal:
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Profiles or Accounts.
- Tap Add account or Add profile.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm your Facebook, WhatsApp or Workplace account, then tap Next.
- Have the person you'd like to add to your Portal select the account(s) they would like to add, then tap Next.
- Have the person you'd like to add follow the on-screen instruction to log in with their Facebook, WhatsApp or Workplace account.
- Tap Next.

When someone adds a profile, they'll be able to:
- See, hear and delete all of your Portal's voice interactions in Portal settings or on their Facebook activity log.
- Make changes to voice interaction settings on your Portal, which will apply to your voice interactions.
- Use and change other settings on your Portal, which may apply across your Portal.
- Add profiles to or remove profiles from your Portal, which could include removing your account.
- Add photos or connect to third-party services on your Portal.
- View and access any information you use or access on your Portal, including the ability to view and call your contacts.
To remove a profile from your Portal:
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Profiles or Accounts.
- Tap the profile that you'd like to remove.
- Tap Remove profile or Remove account and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Tap Remove to confirm.
Calling basics
You can make and receive calls:
- To and from Facebook friends and WhatsApp contacts of connected accounts.
- Using Messenger Rooms.
- Using apps such as Workplace, Zoom, Webex and BlueJeans.
You can't call Messenger connections that don't have Facebook accounts or upload contacts from your phone. Learn more about adding or removing contacts.
Using voice interactions
"Hey Portal" availability varies. Learn more about "Hey Portal" availability.
To make a call, say:
- "Hey Portal, call [contact name]".
- "Hey Portal, answer".
- "Hey Portal, hang up".
"Hey Portal" or "Hey Facebook" may ask you to confirm which contact you're trying to call by saying "Yes", "No" or by saying the full name of the contact you're trying to call.
If you have a Facebook and WhatsApp account connected to your device, voice commands will automatically default to your Messenger contacts. To call someone on WhatsApp, you can say, "Hey Portal, call [contact name] on WhatsApp" or change your default call provider to WhatsApp.
To make WhatsApp your default call provider:
- From Apps
, tap to open the Settings
.
- Tap General, then tap next to Default calling provider to turn on or off.
When you change your default call provider to WhatsApp, all calls made from "Hey Portal" or "Hey Facebook" will be made on WhatsApp, unless you say "Hey Portal, call [contact name] on Messenger".
Using the touch screen
To make a call:
- From Apps
, tap to open the Contacts app. You can filter your contacts by Suggested, Recent, Messenger and WhatsApp.
- Tap the contact that you'd like to call.
- Make a selection to start your call.
To answer a call:
When receiving a call, tap Answer to join the call.
To end a call:
- During a call, tap your Portal screen to expose the call menu.
- Tap
to end the call.
Call features
During a call, you can do things such as:
- Move and talk freely while Portal's Smart Camera and Smart Sound adjust to keep you audible and in the frame.
- Add more friends to the call.
- Use AR effects and Story Time.
- Turn your microphone or camera off.
- Control your camera during a call.
- Use Facebook Watch.
You can use the Photo app on your device or the Portal app on your mobile phone to choose which photos to display on your Portal. You can display photos from Facebook albums, Portal albums and Instagram posts.
We consider things such as how often you use your Portal, how often you swipe through photos and basic user information to determine the order your photos appear on your Portal's display.
Facebook and Portal albums
To add or remove photos from your device:
- From Apps
, tap Photos
.
- Tap the album that you would like to add or remove.
- Tap next to Display to add or remove photos.
To hide or unhide photos:
- From Apps
, tap Photos
.
- Tap the album, then tap the photo you would like to hide.
- Tap Hide or Unhide.
To unhide photos:
- From Apps
, tap Photos
.
- Tap Settings
.
- Tap Hidden photos.
- Tap the photo you want to unhide, then tap Unhide.
If you remove a photo from Facebook that was previously displayed on Portal, it will no longer appear on Portal.
Instagram posts
To add your Instagram posts:
- From Apps
, tap Photos
. You may need to confirm your login to make changes.
- Tap Add your Instagram photos then select Add account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm your Instagram account.
- Tap Your posts to see your Instagram posts on Portal.
To remove your Instagram posts:
- From Apps
, tap Photos
. You may need to confirm your login to make changes.
- Below Instagram, select the account that you want to remove.
- Select Remove account.
- Tap Remove.
Portal app
To add photos from your mobile phone to a Portal album:
- Open the Portal app on your mobile device.
- Tap
Photos, then tap the photo plus icon in the top right-hand corner.
- Tap the photos that you would like to add, then tap Add photos.
- Tap New album or an existing album.
- If you are creating a new album, type your album name and tap Create album.
To add or remove albums from the Portal app:
- Open the Portal app on your mobile device.
- Tap
Photos.
- Tap the album that you would like to add or remove.
- Tap Display to display or remove the album.
To remove apps from your Portal home screen:
- From Apps
, press and hold the app you would like to remove until
appears on the corner of your apps.
- Tap
on the app you'd like to remove.
- Tap Done when you've finished editing your apps.
After you've set up your Portal, you'll have a selection of apps already installed, and a selection of apps available for download. Some apps may require additional account login, registration or payment. App availability differs based on the location where you use Portal. See portal.facebook.com/usage for more information.
To add new apps to your Portal:
- From your home screen, tap Apps
.
- Tap Apps
.
- Tap Get next to the app that you'd like to download.
To add new websites:
You can use your Portal browser to visit websites on your Portal. You can add popular websites to Home and shortcuts to these websites will appear next to your apps.
- From your home screen, tap Apps
.
- Tap Apps
.
- Tap Websites, then tap Get next to the website that you'd like to add to Home.
You can connect and play music through several streaming services on your Portal, including Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Music and iHeartRadio. App availability differs based on the location where you use Portal. See portal.facebook.com/usage for more information.
Spotify
To use Spotify, select Spotify from Home on your Portal. A Spotify Premium account isn't required to use Spotify on Portal.
To connect your Spotify Premium account:
- From Apps
, tap Spotify.
- Tap Connect Spotify.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your Spotify account.
Pandora
To connect a Pandora account, you can use a Pandora, Pandora Plus or Pandora Premium account. Pandora is only currently available if you use Portal in the US.
To connect Pandora:
- From Apps
, tap Pandora.
- Tap Connect Pandora.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect your Pandora account.
Amazon Music
Over the next few months, we are updating your Portal’s home screen and settings. Some steps will be different if your Portal has the new home screen.
To use Amazon Music, you must connect an Amazon Alexa account to your Portal. Once connected, you can use your voice to play music using voice commands such as:
- "Alexa, play [artist name]".
- "Alexa, play [music genre]".
- "Alexa, play [song title]".
To connect Alexa:
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Assistants.
- Tap Amazon Alexa and follow the on-screen instructions to log in with your Amazon account.
- Tap Continue.
- Tap Done.
iHeartRadio
To use iHeartRadio, select iHeartRadio from Home on your Portal. An iHeartRadio account isn't required to use iHeartRadio on Portal. iHeartRadio is only currently available if you're using Portal in the US.
Notes:
- You can disconnect your third-party accounts from Portal by tapping Disconnectnext to the account from the Accounts section of the Settings menu.
- If an account that was connected to Spotify or Pandora is removed from your Portal, the third-party service will be disconnected from the device.
Brightness
To adjust the brightness of your Portal display:
- Swipe up
from the bottom of your Portal display to view the quick controls.
- Use the slider to adjust your Portal's brightness.
To adjust the brightness from the settings:
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Display.
- Tap next to Automatic screen brightness
to turn off, then use the slider to adjust your Portal's brightness.
Night mode
You can use night mode to control your Portal's settings in the dark.
To adjust night mode:
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Display, then tap Night mode
- Tap next to Status
to turn on or off. Or, tap Schedule to turn night mode on and off automatically.
Clock
You can set up your Portal to show a clock in low light instead of displaying your pictures.
- From Apps
, tap Settings
.
- Tap Display.
- Tap
next to Only show clock in low lighting to turn on and off.
You can control volume directly by tapping the volume buttons on your Portal, or by swiping up from the bottom of your Portal screen to view the quick controls.
In addition you can use voice by saying 'hey portal volume up', 'hey portal volume down' or 'hey portal volume 1-10'.
We recommend the following tips to make sure that you're using your Portal safely and responsibly with kids in the home:
- Set a passcode to keep your screen locked when it's not in use.
- Turn on household mode.
- Choose which content ratings are offered for Watch Together.
- Turn your microphone and camera off when you aren't using your Portal, or use the included camera cover.
- Learn how to control which photos display on Portal and how to add photos that you don't want visible on Facebook.
- Control which contacts you add to favourites.
- Learn how voice controls work on Portal.
- Learn about controlling third-party apps.
You must have an active Facebook or WhatsApp account and therefore be 13 years of age or older to create a Portal profile. While Portal is designed to help families connect, it is not a children's device and should not be used without parental supervision.
