Electric Bikes: The safety essentials before you ride

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are a growing and popular way to cruise. They offer powered pedal assistance through battery power which helps you to ride with ease. Whilst there are many advantages to e-bikes, it should be remembered that safety comes first. In this article, we outline 8 essential safety tips to consider before you begin any journey.

#1: Wear a helmet

Wearing a helmet whilst you ride is an essential safety precaution. This goes for both electric bikes and push bikes, as well as scooters. Helmets reduce the risk of any injuries in the event of an accident when riding. Ensure the helmet fits snugly and securely before riding. Almost all helmets are measured by head size of the rider. So although some helmets may look the right size, always makes sure to measure the riders head size before purchasing a helmet.

#2: High visibility clothing

Wearing high-visibility clothing is important to ensure you are visible on the road to other vehicles. This means opting for clothing that is bright or reflective so that even in darker conditions you can be easily noticeable. Simply adding a reflective jacket before you ride can play a huge part in increasing your visibility and saftey on the road.

#3: Lights and reflectors

Your electric bike is likely to have inbuilt lights so it is important to ensure these are working correctly before you take off. We also recommend adding additional reflectors to the bike, pedals, and clothing on the front and rear to increase your visibility and reflect light at all angles.

#4: Check your speed

Whilst the assisted power of the battery can be beneficial, you should note that e-bikes can sometimes reach higher speeds as a result. Ensure you are mindful of your speed in areas of traffic or pedestrians. At higher speeds, you have an increased stopping time and distance,  so becoming comfortable with the different speed settings of your bike can mean you can ride safely and react in good timing when required.

#5: Follow traffic rules and highway code

When riding, it is important to remember that your bike can be considered a vehicle on the road. This means that you should always be obeying traffic laws. This means you should be following road signage and giving way where appropriate. This ensures you and other road users are safe.

#6: Maintain your e-bike

Your bike is a piece of equipment that helps you to get from A to B safely. With this in mind, it is crucial it is maintained correctly to keep it operating properly. You should regularly check your brakes, tyres, and suspension in accordance with any user guidance from the manufacturer. Having routine maintenance can keep your bike lasting long and reduce the risk of a breakdown.

#7: Be aware of your surroundings

When you’re out on the bike, you should always be alert and aware of your surroundings. This includes the road conditions, other vehicles, and pedestrians. Ensure your eyes are always on the surroundings and do not use your phone or headphones whilst riding as these can reduce your awareness.

#8: Know your limits

Each and every one of us has our own experience levels and abilities when it comes to riding. We recommend sticking to any areas and terrain you are comfortable with and ride within them. If you want to push yourself to get more experience, ensure you are in a safe or quiet area so you can build your own individual expertise and gain familiarity.

Conclusion

By following these safety essentials you can be confident you are playing your part in your safety and the safety of other road users. Remember to always take precaution and ride safely.
