The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning and Maintaining Your Mattress

This is a general guide on best practices to caring for your mattress. However, it is important to always check your manufacturers specific guidance before carrying out any of the following cleaning or Maintenace.

Your mattress is one of the most used items in your home, yet it is often overlooked when it comes to cleaning and care. A well looked after mattress not only supports better sleep but can also extend its life by several years. With just a few simple habits, you can keep your mattress clean, comfortable, and performing at its best.

Regular Cleaning

Over time, your mattress collects dust, sweat, skin cells, and allergens. To keep it fresh and hygienic, vacuum the surface and seams every one to two months using a handheld or upholstery attachment. For spills or stains, spot clean as soon as possible with a mild detergent and cold water. Never soak the mattress and avoid using strong chemicals unless the care label specifically says it is safe.

To help remove odours, sprinkle baking soda across the surface and leave it to sit for a few hours. Then vacuum thoroughly to remove any residue. Using a mattress protector is also a smart way to shield against spills, dirt, and allergens, helping keep your mattress in better condition for longer.

The Importance of Rotating Your Mattress

One of the easiest and most effective ways to look after your mattress is to rotate it regularly. However, not every mattress can/should be rotated so it is very important to consult the user manual first.  Most people tend to sleep in the same position each night, which causes uneven wear in certain areas, especially where the shoulders and hips rest.

Rotating your mattress from head to foot roughly every three months (Refer to user manual for specific guidance) helps spread the wear evenly across the surface. This prevents sagging and reduces the risk of permanent body impressions forming. It can also improve your comfort and support for longer. This is particularly important for memory foam and hybrid mattresses, which can soften unevenly if left in the same position for too long. Always check the manufacturer's instructions, but in general, regular rotation will help extend the life of your mattress.

Avoid Sitting on the Edges

It might be convenient to sit on the side of your bed while getting dressed or using your phone, but doing so often can cause damage. The edges of your mattress are not designed to support concentrated pressure in one spot. Repeatedly sitting on the sides can weaken the edge support and cause the sides to collapse over time, similar to how not rotating your mattress leads to uneven wear.

Once the edges lose their structure, the mattress may start to feel unstable and getting in and out of bed can become more difficult. To avoid this, try to sit closer to the middle if you need to use your bed as a seat.

Do Not Bend or Fold Your Mattress

Another mistake that can seriously affect your mattress is bending or folding it, especially during moves or when putting it into storage. Many mattresses are delivered and designed to stay flat. Bending can damage the internal structure, break springs, or crack foam layers.

If you are moving your mattress, carry it flat or stand it upright if the type allows it. Do not strap it tightly to the roof of a car or squeeze it through narrow spaces, as this can cause damage that affects its comfort and support.

Final Thoughts

A clean and well-maintained mattress is essential for good sleep and long-term comfort. With regular vacuuming, rotation, and careful handling, you can protect your investment and enjoy a healthier sleeping environment. Avoid common mistakes like sitting on the edges or folding the mattress, and you will keep it in excellent condition for years to come.
