Clean Smarter: Start with Your Vacuum

Your vacuum cleaner works hard to keep your home clean but how often do you return the favour? A well maintained vacuum does not just perform better it lasts longer smells fresher and saves you money in the long run. If you have noticed your vacuum losing suction, spitting out debris or simply not running like it used to a bit of routine TLC might be all it needs.

The top benefits and tips for cleaning your vacuum and keeping it running like new.

Why Clean Your Vacuum

Just like any other household appliance your vacuum cleaner needs regular maintenance to function properly. Over time dust, hair and debris can clog filters block tubes and jam the roller head all of which reduce performance and can even lead to permanent damage. Common issues that arise from neglecting vacuum maintenance include:

  • Poor or complete loss of suction
  • Debris being spat back out due to blockages
  • Reduced battery performance or complete charging failure
  • Decreased overall power and cleaning ability

Top Tips for Cleaning Your Vacuum

  • Clean Filters Regularly

Filters are essential to maintaining suction and keeping dust from being recirculated into the air. Depending on your model you may have foam HEPA or washable filters.

Check your user manual for guidance but most filters benefit from a gentle rinse under warm water. Be sure to let them dry fully ideally for 24 hours before reinserting. Never put a damp filter back in the vacuum as this can cause damage and mould.

  • Ensure Proper Reassembly

When reinserting the filter make sure it is positioned correctly. An incorrectly placed filter can seriously affect your vacuum’s performance and even lead to overheating.

  • Remove Debris from the Roller Head.

Hair and string can wrap around the roller brush reducing its ability to pick up dirt. Use scissors to gently cut away tangled debris.

  • Check Tubes and Attachments for Blockages.

It is easy for clumps of fluff, small toys or even socks to get stuck in vacuum hoses. Detach accessories and inspect all parts for hidden blockages.

  • Clean the Charging Port if Cordless

For cordless models use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe the charging port and ensure there is no dust or debris. A dirty port can prevent your vacuum from charging properly.

  • Empty the Dust Container or Bag Frequently.

Do not wait until it is overflowing. A full dustbin reduces suction and puts extra strain on the motor. Empty it after each use or at least when it reaches the fill line.

  • Wipe Down the Exterior and Vents

Give the outside of your vacuum a quick clean with a damp microfibre cloth to keep it looking new and hygienic. Also, ensure any vents are lint free for maximum efficiency.

  • Store It Properly

Keep your vacuum in a cool dry place to avoid damage from moisture or excessive heat. Proper storage also prevents accidental knocks and falls.

Final Thoughts

Just a few minutes of maintenance can dramatically improve your vacuum's lifespan and cleaning efficiency. Treat your vacuum well and it will return the favour every time you switch it on. A clean vacuum equals a cleaner home it really is that simple.
