Winter Storage Tips for Your Garden Petrol Equipment

As the days grow shorter and the chill sets in, it’s time to give your garden petrol equipment a well-earned rest. Whether it’s a lawnmower, strimmer, or hedge trimmer, proper winter storage helps extend the life of your tools and ensures they’re ready to roar back into action come spring.

Here’s a simple guide to help you store your petrol-powered garden equipment safely and smartly.

Give It a Good Clean

Before anything else, give your equipment a thorough clean. Remove grass clippings, mud, and debris from blades, vents, and undercarriages. A stiff brush and a damp cloth usually do the trick. This prevents rust and keeps pests away.

Remove the Petrol

Petrol left in the tank over winter can go stale and gum up the carburettor, leading to starting problems later. Here’s what to do:

  • Run the engine dry: Start the equipment and let it run until it stops. This uses up the remaining fuel.
  • Alternatively, siphon out the petrol and dispose of it safely or use it in another tool if it’s still fresh.

Tip: Never store equipment with a full tank unless it’s treated with a fuel stabilizer.

Remove the Spark Plug

Taking out the spark plug is a smart move for long-term storage.

By doing so prevents accidental starts and allows you to inspect or replace the plug if needed.

  • Bonus tip: Add a few drops of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, then pull the starter cord a couple of times to coat the internal parts. This helps prevent corrosion.

Always refer to the user manual for specific instructions and guidance.

Change the Oil (if your machine has it)

If your mower has an oil reservoir, drain it and refill with fresh oil before storage. Old oil can corrode metal parts over winter, and clean oil means a smoother start next season.

Check the Air Filter

Remove and check the Air filter. Knock off dust or replace if it’s looking tired.

A blocked or worn-out air filter, can cause several issues such as overheating, allow dust into sensitive components, make the machine noisy or vibrate as the motor struggles to maintain optimal performance.

Always refer to the user manual for specific guidance.

Check and Store Accessories

Clean and inspect any accessories like blades, cords, or attachments. Sharpen blades if needed and store everything in a dry, secure place.

Store in a Dry, Sheltered Spot

Choose a cool, dry location like a shed or garage. Avoid damp areas that can cause rust or mildew. Cover your equipment with a breathable tarp or cloth to keep dust off while allowing air circulation.

In Summary

Proper winter storage of garden petrol equipment is essential to maintain performance, prevent damage, and extend the lifespan of your tools. By cleaning thoroughly, draining fuel, protecting metal parts, and storing in a dry, sheltered space, you ensure your equipment is ready to go when spring arrives. A little care now saves time, money, and hassle later.
