FAQs

If you created a Fitbit account and followed the set up instructions, the data your tracker collects should sync when you open the Fitbit app or when you initiate the Sync Now command. To learn more about how syncing works on mobile devices and computers, see How do Fitbit trackers sync their data?

If your tracker doesn't sync when prompted, click here for further guidance.

If your tracker has one of the following problems, it may be fixed by a restart:

  • Your tracker isn't syncing
  • Your tracker isn't responding to button presses, taps, or swipes
  • Your tracker is charged but doesn't turn on
  • Your tracker isn't tracking your steps or other stats

For restart instructions, choose your tracker below.

Note: Restarting your tracker turns it off and on without deleting any activity data. If your tracker saves notifications, a restart deletes them.
  1. Open the battery door using the battery door tool and remove the battery.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Place the battery back into the tracker with the "+" side facing up, and close the door.
Your Fitbit Zip is now restarted. You will see your tracker's version number, followed by a series of Fitbit Smilies. When you tap your tracker, it should work normally. If your tracker still doesn't work after a restart, contact Customer Support.
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate at which you burn calories at rest just to maintain vital body functions like breathing, heartbeat, and brain activity. Your BMR usually accounts for at least half of the calories you burn in a day and is estimated based on the physical data you entered when you set up your account: gender, age, height, and weight.

The calorie burn estimate that Fitbit provides takes into account your BMR, the activity recorded by your tracker, and any activities you log manually.

Your tracker's calorie count will reset each night at midnight and begin counting immediately thereafter. BMR is the reason your tracker starts the day with calories already burned—you've still burned calories even if you haven't gotten out of bed yet.

Exercise goals help you track your weekly workout routine and stay motivated. Choose a shortcut to see the answer below:

WHAT IS MY EXERCISE GOAL?

The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 days per week. Your Fitbit exercise goal represents the number of days per week you want to exercise. By default, your goal is 5 days per week. Any exercise captured in your exercise history counts towards your goal.

HOW DO I TRACK MY EXERCISE?

Fitbit provides several methods for tracking workouts. Regardless of how you choose to capture exercise data, it's saved in your exercise history (called the activity log on fitbit.com). Tap the exercise tile on your dashboard to see your history and the details of any particular workout. For a description of exercise tracking methods, see How do I track my exercise and activities with Fitbit?

For exercise recommendations, see the American Heart Association’s Recommendations for Physical Activity article.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY EXERCISE GOAL?

By default your exercise goal is set to five days. You can change your goal to a different number of days, but you must have a minimum goal of one day. You can change your goal for current and future weeks, but you can’t adjust it for past weeks. To change your exercise goal, choose your app below. Note that you can only modify exercise goals using the Fitbit app. It's not possible to set or change exercise goals using the fitbit.com dashboard.

HOW DO I TRACK MY GOAL PROGRESS?

On your Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Exercise tile. The sides of the shape at the top of the screen match your exercise goal. Each day you exercise, another side of the shape fills in. You can also look back through your exercise history and see at a glance whether you met your exercise goal that week.

When you meet your weekly goal you'll receive a congratulatory message.

If you're having trouble syncing your tracker with your computer, you may need to reinstall the Fitbit Connect software. For more information about syncing, see How do Fitbit trackers sync their data?

Before reinstalling, we recommend that you temporarily disable any antivirus software because it may interfere with proper installation of Fitbit Connect. You can re-enable your antivirus once the installation is complete.
  1. On a PC: Open Control Panel > Programs and Features > select Fitbit Connect and Uninstall.
On a Mac: search for Fitbit Connect. Open the file, then click the Uninstall icon.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Go to www.fitbit.com/setup.
  4. Scroll to the button and click the Download button.
  5. Find and open the file you just downloaded, then follow the instructions onscreen.
  6. Try to force sync your tracker:
    1. Make sure your tracker is nearby and awake.
    2. Click the Fitbit Connect icon and choose Open Main Menu.
    3. Click Sync Now. You may be asked to sign in, after which your tracker should sync with your account.

If your tracker suffers damage while under warranty, please contact Customer Support. Discounts and replacements depend on tracker model and other factors.

If your tracker got wet, please see I washed my tracker.

If your Zip's display isn't working, first make sure your battery still has some charge. You can do this by logging into your dashboard and clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner. You'll see an image of your tracker and the approximate battery life remaining. See How do I maximize my tracker's battery life? to learn the life expectancy of your battery and other helpful information. If you feel your battery has drained quickly, see My Zip's battery is draining quickly.

If your battery isn't drained, try restarting your tracker:

  1. Open the battery door using the black plastic battery door tool or a quarter and remove the battery.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Place the battery back into the device making sure that the plus side is facing up.
  4. Close the battery door, then flip your Fitbit Zip™ over and give it a tap. The display should work as normal.

If your Zip still does not function properly, please contact Customer Support.

  1. If you have a Zip, unlock your the battery door and remove the battery.
  2. Place your tracker into a bowl of dry rice for 24 hours. This will extract any moisture still inside.
  3. After your tracker has been in rice for 24 hours:
    1. If you have a Zip, put a dry battery back into the tracker and lock the door. If the screen turns on, you should be back on track.
    2. If you have a One, restart it using the instructions in How do I restart my tracker?
  4. If your tracker doesn't work after putting in the battery or a restart, contact  Customer Support.

While Fitbit Connect you may see an error message that says, "Background sync service is not running on your computer. To continue, you'll need to reinstall Fitbit Connect."

This error occurs when Fitbit Connect is not properly installed, which can result from a conflict with antivirus software or firewall utilities on your computer. This error can also occur if Fitbit Connect wasn't saved in the default location.

To uninstall and reinstall Fitbit Connect, see How do I reinstall Fitbit Connect?

The Zip's battery should last up to 6 months with regular use. If your Fitbit Zip is showing a low battery icon within the first month of use, this is often resolved by updating your Zip.
